Watershed Stewards Academy (WSA) is an initiative of Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center and the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works to empower communities to restore local waterways.  The Watershed Stewards Academy trains and supports community leaders to serve as Master Watershed Stewards working to reduce the negative impacts of storm water runoff in Anne Arundel County.  Along with solutions and resources, this site has an interesting mapping tool you can use to explore your watershed.

The Chesapeake Ecology Center is located in Annapolis, MD. The Chesapeake Ecology Center is dedicated to promoting and educating the public about community greening and conservation landscaping practices for the Chesapeake Bay watershed that result in a healthier and more beautiful environment benefiting both residents and the region’s biological diversity.

The Chesapeake Conservation Landscaping Council is a coalition of individuals and organizations dedicated to researching, promoting, and educating the public about conservation-based gardening and landscaping practices in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.  The Council is committed to fostering changes in public attitudes and the implementation of sustainable practices. shares many ways that homeowners and communities can take action to reduce polluted runoff and prevent it from reaching our waterways.  RainScaping practices improve water quality, restore habitat, and add beauty to the landscape.  Additional significant benefits are increased property values and a reduction in a community’s carbon footprint.

Low Impact Development Center – What is a rain garden?  This site has information and templates for rain garden designs specific to the geographical areas in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.  There are templates for sunny or shady sites, a large or small rain garden size, a variety of designs to attract birds and pollinators and plans that use a mixture of plant materials from trees and shrubs to annuals and perennials.

Bayscapes Conservation Landscaping is a site for native plant guides for Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.  There is a link to the 83-page publication offered by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service entitled “Native Plants for Wildlife Habitat and Conservation Landscaping Chesapeake Bay Watershed” and a separate guide to invasive plant species.

Native Plants of Maryland – a link to the 24-page University of Maryland Extension publication with an extensive list of Maryland native plants in a variety of formats—plant listings by type of plant and preferred conditions and listings by common name.  On this page, you can also access a list of nurseries in Maryland that sell native plants.

Native Plants for Anne Arundel County, Maryland is a downloadable publication put out by Master Gardeners specifically for Anne Arundel County.  This is an easy publication to carry with you and refer to when you go to area nurseries for your plant choices.

Rain Barrels of Annapolis uses authentic aged oak whiskey and wine barrels converted to rain barrels to harvest water.  This vendor is pre-approved with the Annapolis Historic Preservation Boundary (permitting is still necessary).

Home and Garden Information Center – the website for home gardening and landscape questions via the Home and Garden Hotline. This is an outreach program of the University of Maryland  Extension.
